Use 13 digit mobile number for all existing M2M users
The Department of Telecom (DoT)has issued instructions to all telecom operators to start using
13 digit mobile numbersfor all existing Machine-to-Machine (M2M) customers from
October 18onward. Further, it has been stated that 13 digit M2M mobile number will be implemented from July 1. The deadline date is December 31, 2018. It is not impact on the regular mobile users in India. The DoT has only asked the existing 10-digit M2M numbers to 13-digit numbers from October 1. To end this speculation, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) number is meant for machines, the ones connected to the internet. M2M or SIM-based IOT devices will be impacted by this. The regular 10-digit mobile number that all customers in India enjoy is not going to change as some websites are reporting incorrectly. M2M is also named as Machine Type Communication (MTC) in 3GPP. What is
M2M communication?
Machinto-Machine (M2M) can be described as the interaction between devices and machines (it could be Airplane, Ship, connected cars, or Bicycle) that are connected to the INTERNET and to each other. The M2M SIM card is required to connect these devices to the internet, though these can be used on regular mobiles as well. However, telecom operators like Vodafone, airtel ,idea etc have dedicated M2M offerings for such communications.
